Kangaroos

Kangaroos are a type of animal that you can see in the zoo or in the wild.
Kangaroos are not mammals. Instead they are marsupials. When a baby kangaroo is born it is as small as a jelly bean. It cannot see and its back legs have not grown yet. But its arms are strong and it can pull itself into the pouch to drink its mother’s milk.
When kangaroos feed on grass and other plants, their heads are closer to the ground and it’s harder to see their predators so they stay in a mob to be safe. Their predators are usually dingoes. The joeys are heavy for the female kangaroos so if a predator is near, the female drops her baby in a safe hiding place then comes back as soon as she can.
The male kangaroos are the boss of the mob. If another male wants to be the boss they will have a fight. They fight with their tail, feet and claws. Whoever wins gets to be the boss and they will fight again if another wants to be the boss.

The Wreck of the Delaware

On a stormy and very windy morning a lady called Huria was waking up. Huria opened up her curtain to find a ship was in trouble. She quickly got her husband Hemi and her friend Hohepata and all three of them ran to shore. All of a sudden there came loud cries for help. In the fierce waves there was a ship in trouble and the wind howled, pushing the ship closer to the dangerous rocks.

On the ship Henry Squirrell volunteered to swim to a big rock and tie a rope around it. As soon as he jumped a wave hauled him onto a rock. Now no-one else volunteered after that. Huria swam to the ship and gave the shipmates a rope to tie to the ship. Huria swam back to the rock and tied the rope around it. Huria called out, “I think you can come across now.”

The first person to come across dropped off and all the other people did too. Then it came to the captain. He took one last look at Henry and decided he was dead so he left.

A short time later Henry started to call for help but no-one could. The rope was broken and just at that moment the ship smashed with all of its cargo.

That’s the story of how Huria became as famous as she is today.

How the Kiwi Lost its Wings

Long, long ago the Kiwi lived up high in the top of the tree and could see around the land the kiwi were very colourful and they could fly. Now I know you don’t believe me so just stick with the story and at the end you will believe me.
Now this was a long time ago, not long after Maui fished up this island from the depths of the ocean. There was much more forest in those days than there is now and the God of the frest was the mighty Tane Mahuta. Tane loved the forest and the birds. The birds were happy and loved to sing but one day everything turned upside down with a plague of bugs. Tane was not happy because they were turning the forest a horrible yellow.
Next morning Tane called the birds down for a meeting. Tane asked Cuckoo first but she said, “Sorry Tane. I am building my nest in the tree. I cannot leave it.”
Next Tane asked Morepork, “Will you do this job for me?”
“Sorry Tane but I just love the light. I cannot see in the dark.”
Then Tane asked Tui, “Will you do it?”
“Sorry, I am afraid. I don’t know the enemies I will face.”
So next he asked Pukeko but Pukeko quickly rippled’ “I don’t want to wet my feet.”
After Tane asked Kiwi. Kiwi said, “Yes Tane, I will do it.”
“If you do this job for me you will lose your bright colours and your wings so you can not change your mind.” Because Kiwi loved the forest he said, “Yes, Tane. I will do it.”
Turning to the other birds Tane said, “Kiwi, of all the birds is not selfish.” You others did not think of the forest. If it wasn’t for Kiwi, the forest would die. All of you shall be punished in a way that will change your lives. Cuckoo, you will lay your eggs in other birds’ nests and Morepork, who loves the light, now you will like the dark. Tui, poor coward; now you will wear a white feather. Pukeko who likes to keep his feet dry; now your feet will nly know the wet swamp. But Kiwi is brave. Go to your places and don’t sing again.” But out of the corner of his eye he saw little Bellbird crying. “I will make my punishment less powerful. Only will you sing in the morning.”
There was a big flash of light and Kiwi found himself on the ground so he shuffled home to bed. So that’s the story of how the kiwi lost his wings.
