How the Kiwi Lost its Wings

Long, long ago the Kiwi lived up high in the top of the tree and could see around the land the kiwi were very colourful and they could fly. Now I know you don’t believe me so just stick with the story and at the end you will believe me.
Now this was a long time ago, not long after Maui fished up this island from the depths of the ocean. There was much more forest in those days than there is now and the God of the frest was the mighty Tane Mahuta. Tane loved the forest and the birds. The birds were happy and loved to sing but one day everything turned upside down with a plague of bugs. Tane was not happy because they were turning the forest a horrible yellow.
Next morning Tane called the birds down for a meeting. Tane asked Cuckoo first but she said, “Sorry Tane. I am building my nest in the tree. I cannot leave it.”
Next Tane asked Morepork, “Will you do this job for me?”
“Sorry Tane but I just love the light. I cannot see in the dark.”
Then Tane asked Tui, “Will you do it?”
“Sorry, I am afraid. I don’t know the enemies I will face.”
So next he asked Pukeko but Pukeko quickly rippled’ “I don’t want to wet my feet.”
After Tane asked Kiwi. Kiwi said, “Yes Tane, I will do it.”
“If you do this job for me you will lose your bright colours and your wings so you can not change your mind.” Because Kiwi loved the forest he said, “Yes, Tane. I will do it.”
Turning to the other birds Tane said, “Kiwi, of all the birds is not selfish.” You others did not think of the forest. If it wasn’t for Kiwi, the forest would die. All of you shall be punished in a way that will change your lives. Cuckoo, you will lay your eggs in other birds’ nests and Morepork, who loves the light, now you will like the dark. Tui, poor coward; now you will wear a white feather. Pukeko who likes to keep his feet dry; now your feet will nly know the wet swamp. But Kiwi is brave. Go to your places and don’t sing again.” But out of the corner of his eye he saw little Bellbird crying. “I will make my punishment less powerful. Only will you sing in the morning.”
There was a big flash of light and Kiwi found himself on the ground so he shuffled home to bed. So that’s the story of how the kiwi lost his wings.
